What are Alerts?
Alerts are a way for you to keep abreast of content changes on the Network without having to actual come visit the site to see if anything has changed. This happens by the network watching for changes for you and sending you an email when something changes.
Say, for example you want to know when new announcements are posted by SAJUG leaders. Click on "
Announcements" on the main
members.sajug.com home page. In the tool bar above the list of announcements is a pull-down menu labeled Actions. Click Actions and notice near the bottom is a choice called "Alert me". Select Alert me and you're taken to a page where you can specify what types of changes you want to be alerted to and how frequently. Let's say you imagine that items might be added in batches. You don't need a separate email for each new item. So, you select to send a daily summary.
Discussion lists, like the
SAJUG Discussion list, works very similarly. You can subscribe to all new questions asked by using the Actions pull-down menu Alert Me selection visible when looking at the list of subjects. However, if you only want to know when your question is answered, hover over your question in the list. Use the pull-down menu that becomes visible and select Alert Me and fill out the form. You can also do this by drilling down to the full question by clicking on the
text of the subject in the
SAJUG Discussion list then using the Actions pull-down menu and Alert Me selection. You can subscribe to anyone else's interesting question the same way!
Subscribing to wiki's is slightly different. If you want to subscribe to any changes that occur to the entire wiki library go to the wiki library home page (like this one -
Site WIKI). The string of text above the wiki page title is called the bread crumb trail (this pages bread crumb trail is SAJUG Members Area > Site WIKI > Home). Click on the wiki library name within the bread crumb trail (
Site Wiki in this case). This will bring you to a list of the wiki pages in this wiki library. Select Actions > Alert me and fill in the form.
If you want to subscribe to a particular page of the wiki go to that page. Click on the "History" tab near the "Edit" and "Incoming Links" tabs. Click on the Alert Me menu item and fill in the form.
Unsubscribe From or Modify an Existing Alert
Lets say that you've previously subscribed to something you're no longer interested in getting Alerts to.
First, note that each "Site" - denoted by the tabs (Home, Member Perks) - has its own set of alerts. Select the site by clicking on the tab, pull down the list that pops up when you click on the "Welcome Your Name" text in the upper right hand part of the browser screen, click on "My Settings", then click on the "My Alerts" link. You'll see a list of all the alerts you've subscribed to on that site. You can delete any of them by clicking the selection box next to it and clicking "Delete Selected Alerts". Or modify one by clicking on it and modifying the choices.
Stay informed! Subscribe to alerts!
